Restaurant Review: Southampton Publick House
Recently my husband and I stopped by the Southampton Publick House in Southampton to sample their award-winning brews.
The Publick House, one of the original microbreweries in what has become an enduring, opened its doors in 1996 at the site of earlier popular restaurants at 40 Bowden Square.
Lucky for us Brewmaster Phil Markowski has been very busy.
I ordered a Keller Pilsner and my husband ordered a Belgian I.P.A. These are the seasonal beers currently available and they were good choices for each of us to enjoy throughout our meal. We also ordered a House Sampler, a flight of 4-ounce samples of Southampton Publick House beers. So we were all set to create our ideal beer pairings.
Naturally, we ordered from the Pub Favorites Menu.
I found the Keller Pilsner light, hoppy, somewhat bitter. It made me want to start my meal with something somewhat sweet – I ordered the Pan Seared Vegetarian Potstickers. They were very hot from their recent searing and delicious. I found the accompanying orange ginger glaze over sweet. Loved the oily-good sautéed spinach garnish. The somewhat bitter Keller Pilsner was a good match for this course, but I decided it was best complimented by the mild, clean Southampton Lager.
I moved on to the Grilled Chicken and Black Bean Quesadilla with rice, Pico de Gallo, guacamole and sour cream, which I found nicely cheesy and so big I ended up having half of it wrapped to go. It looked like a huge smile on my dinner plate. It was not too spicy, I found that it paired best with the malty flavor of the Southampton Secret Ale.
Husband quite liked the rich, spicy, almost smoky Belgian I.P.A. with its notable hops and grapefruity finish. He ordered the Brewer’s Burger with bacon and sautéed onions and shoestring fries. He determined that his best pairing for the burger was the Double White Ale, with its hints of coriander and curacao orange.
We also enjoyed sampling the Southampton Altbier and Southampton I.P.A.
You can pick up growlers and six packs of Southampton Publick House’s beers to go, so we went home with a growler of the Southampton I.P.A.
