Mets Fan Jerry Seinfeld Holding on to Jose
East Hampton resident Jerry Seinfeld is the ultimate New York Mets fan, but his loyalty does have its boundaries.
Two weeks ago Seinfeld told the world that he’d named his new puppy Jose after Mets shortstop Jose Reyes. The dachshund was featured live on Live! as Seinfeld guest-hosted with fellow Hamptonite Kelly Ripa. Seinfeld revealed, “This is Jose that we just got and we got him because the Seinfeld family loves Jose Reyes so much, and we want the Mets to keep Jose Reyes.”
“We want you to make a deal with Jose Reyes. That’s what we want. … He’s my favorite baseball player. He’s the most thrilling baseball player.”
Seinfeld was humorously called out by WFAN’s Craig Carton of the Boomer and Carton Show when the host took the comedian to task for a lack of machismo. Seinfeld immediately responded by saying on the air, “I’m talking about my kids, I’m holding a puppy, how do you want me to talk, like Charles Bronson?”
It wouldn’t have helped. No matter how tough he talked nor how hard he hoped his favorite player would resign with the Mets, Jose Reyes is now officially a Florida Marlin, having signed a $106 million, six-year contract that was finalized today.
On a positive note, however, Seinfeld will be keeping Jose the dog. As Carton said this morning, “he has a no trade paws.”
