Summer 2012 Preview: 33rd Annual Shelter Island Run
Run with some of the greatest distance runners in the world through the beauty of Shelter Island! One of the highlights of the summer for runners and walkers is always the Shelter Island Run. This year, the 33rd annual event, which is comprised of a 10K run and a 5K fun walk, will be held on Saturday, June 16 at 5:30 p.m.
Known as much for its elite field of participants as its picturesque scenery, the Shelter Island Run is more than just a race. Weekend activities include a pasta party on Friday night, kids fun run, pre-race stretching clinic, awards and a post race party. Proceeds from the event benefit the Shelter Island Run Community Fund, East End Hospice and Timothy Hill Children’s Ranch.
Olympians committed to the run this year are sailor Amanda Clark-Nissen; Frank Shorter, the gold medal winner in the marathon at the 1972 Summer Olympics; Joan Benoit Samuelson, who took gold in the marathon in the 1984 Olympics; Keith Brantly, a marathoner in the 1996 Olympics; and Bill Rodgers, a 1976 Olympics marathoner.
