"Blessing of the Boards" in Montauk
The blessing of surfboards is not a new or rare practice. From ancient Hawaii to the surf culture in California, surfboards have been associated with highly spiritual affairs for ages. However, Saint Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church in Montauk is taking the blessing of surfboards to a whole new level with their 2nd annual Blessing of the Boards.
Surfboards, skateboards, skimboards, snowboards, boogie boards, wood boards, ironing boards—the Montauk church is creating a new practice on Long Island, blessing basically anything that ends in the word board and using this event as a way to get the young people of the community involved. Last year, Reverend Michael Rieder shared that if the event can help to get young people involved in the church and have them view it as “kind of cool,” then it’s worth the time.
The 2nd annual Blessing of the Boards takes place Sunday, May 27, 2012, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Saint Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church in Montauk.
