Dead Body Washes Ashore In Montauk, Identified As Lost Tugboat Captain
The body of Brendan O’Leary, 48, of Marblehead, MA., was found floating about 4 miles south of Montauk Point Saturday morning by a charter fishing boat.
The crew of the 91-foot tugboat Steven-Scott called the Coast Guard on Wednesday to report that they hadn’t seen their captain for nearly an hour and they believed he fell overboard. A massive search for Brendan took place, but it was to no avail, the seas took him. Brendan’s tugboat was carrying a large quantity of jetfuel to Boston.
As an avid sailor, this kind of thing is a big reminder to play it safe out there. Fishermen and commercial mariners take tremendous risk when they head out on the open sea. The story of Brendan is just so incredibly sad. This kind of thing always gets to me a little.
