Greenport Museum’s East End Challenge Showcase
The 2013 exhibit at Greenport‘s East End Seaport Museum, in partnership with East End Arts, showcases the finalists of the East End Challenge. This year’s theme is “The Bays Around Us, A Tribute to Rachel Carson.”
The challenge, open to all high school students of the East End (including Riverhead Town), asks students to complete a project that explores the intersection of science and art—as Rachel Carson did, who used literature to express the findings of her rigorous scientific observations.
The finalists include 21 students—some working in teams—and their 13 projects. The opening and awards ceremony takes place from 5–8 p.m. on May 25 at the East End Seaport Museum, Third St. at the Ferry Dock in the former Long Island Railroad station in Greenport. More than $2,500 in cash prizes will be awarded to the finalists, judged by a panel of artists, scientists and educators, to have created the most innovative projects based on quality, message, inventive observation and creative interpretation of the maritime world on the East End of Long Island—or, to paraphrase Einstein, looking at what everyone else is looking at and seeing what no one else is seeing. Each finalist will receive a $100 honorarium.
Rachel Carson wrote, “The realities of science are the realities of life itself. We cannot understand the problems that concern us in this, our particular moment of time, unless we first understand our environment and the forces that have made us what we are, physically and mentally.” In this spirit, with its particular relevance in the aftermath of recent storms, the East End Seaport Museum hopes to institute an annual challenge to involve local communities and encourage young people to observe and help shape the future of an increasingly fragile Long Island.
The exhibition continues through October 14, 2013.
