Be Like Flanders: Design Your Best East End Flag!
The hamlet of Flanders raised its new official flag at 10 a.m. this morning in Flanders Memorial Park, where it will continue to fly for years to come.
Designed by local student Shannon Merker, the new Flanders flag features famous landmark The Big Duck, along with the words “Home Of The Big Duck” and “Founded in 1648.” It’s a perfectly appropriate and attractive flag for the hamlet.
In the spirit of Merker‘s design, it may be time that other East End villages, towns and hamlets get new flags of their own. But they need to get at the true essence of the places represented.
For example, our new Sag Harbor flag (pictured above) is a true representation of that village’s populace and its love of a good fight. Maybe the next big box store, gas station or condo development will think twice about sullying Sag Harbor when this flag flies over Main Street?
Please send us your flag designs. If we get enough, we’ll run them in a featured photo gallery on our new website, DansPapers.com, which is coming very soon, and we’ll give a Dan’s Papers T-shirt to the person with the best flag.
Maybe you’ll make a Hamptons flag encompassing the entire glitzy and agrarian region? Or a Water Mill flag featuring Shorty the local wild turkey? Perhaps you’ll make a flag representing North Fork wine country or your favorite hamlet there? The choice is yours.
Let’s see what you’ve got!
