Barcelona Beach in Sag Harbor Got Its Name How?
This is what we know about Barcelona, the promoontory of wooded bayfront land on Peconic Bay in Sag Harbor. One group of historians say it was named that because the big schooner Barcelonashipwrecked there around 1875. Another group of historians say this ship and others passing this promontory did just fine and did not shipwreck there. But the crew of one particular ship, all that promontory through a telescope and said wow, doesn’t that high cliff on that promontory remind you of the one at Barcelona? There was also a famous but very secret boat party just offshore there for many years that people called “Barcelona.” It was a code word. Like “Barcelona. This Saturday Mum’s the word.”
