On the heels of the release of her “Back to Blue” ad for Gap, in which she covers her father’s classic song “Just the Way You Are,” 27-year-old singer-songwriter Alexa Ray Joel appeared on Katie Couric‘s talk show Katie this week.
Joel, the daughter of Sag Harbor’s Billy Joel and Bridgehampton’s Christie Brinkley, discussed the challenge of covering a famous song. “It was a little scary at first, and I thought, ‘OK, I really need to make this my own and put my own stamp on it,'” she told Couric. Her dad was with her as she orchestrated the song.
In 1979, “Just the Way You Are” won the Grammy for both “Song of the Year” and “Record of the Year.”
