Cops: Men Busted With 10 Pounds of Pot in Water Mill
Two men were arrested with more than 10 pounds of marijuana in Water Mill on Saturday night after they were pulled over for speeding, according to police.
Southampton Town police said an officer noticed a strong odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle and uncovered two large garbage bags in the back filled with freshly harvested marijuana. “Marijuana has a putrid smell, whether it’s in a bag or just been smoked,” Sgt. John Boden said. “It has a very distinct odor.”
The men were placed under arrest at 9:08 p.m.
The driver, 38-year-old Daniel Dost of Centereach, and the passenger, 43-year-old William Whelan of Lake Grove, were both charged with second-degree criminal possession of marijuana, a felony, unlawfully growing marijuana, a misdemeanor, and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation. Dost was found to be driving with a suspended license, according to police, and was additionally charged with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor, and several traffic violations.
The men were held overnight for morning arraignment at Southampton Town Justice Court. In lieu of posting $8,100 bail, Dost was remanded to the Suffolk County Correctional Facility in Riverside, and Whelan was remanded in lieu of $10,100 bail.
Police did not say where the marijuana was grown or where it was being taken to.
