Hamptons Cellular Service Getting a 4G Upgrade
Multiple cellular providers have been upgrading their antennas in Southampton as of late, providing 4G service to the Hamptons.
Workers in bucket trucks that reach extraordinary heights have been swapping out antennas on the cellular tower located in the New York State Highway Maintenance Yard in Southampton.
The tower stands 118 feet high. Crown Communications, which owns the tower, has leased the land it sits on from New York State since 1997, according to highway department spokeswoman Eileen Peters. The top ring of communication receivers and repeaters is reserved for New York State police transmissions.
In February 2013, Verizon installed new antenna mounts and equipment. T-Mobile swapped out its antennas recently, Sprint removed six antennas and replaced them with three 4G antennas, and AT&T is scheduled to replace its antennas, according to Peters.
Peters noted that companies that lease space on the tower are prohibited from performing any work on it during osprey mating and nesting season.
