Cops: Sag Harbor Man Had Illegally Silenced Rifle
A Sag Harbor man stopped for a vehicle and traffic violation Sunday morning in Sagaponack was found to have an illegally modified rifle, according to Southampton Town police.
Police said that at 8:35 a.m. on Sagg Main Street 45-year-old Jameson S. Ellis of Sag Harbor was pulled over for having an expired inspection sticker. He had a rifle with him that was silenced and, as a result, was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a felony, and prohibited use of a firearm, which is a misdemeanor under the Environmental Conservation Law prohibiting use of a rifle to hunt on Long Island, according to police. He was additionally cited for driving an uninspected vehicle.
Ellis was taken to Southampton Town police headquarters in Hampton Bays and held for arraignment.
