Eastport Woman Erika Strebel Killed in Hit-and-Run
Suffolk County police are investigating a Saturday night hit-in-run accident in Eastport that left a woman dead who was standing by a broken down vehicle.
Police said Erika Strebel, of Eastport, and Edward Barton, of East Moriches, were by Strebel’s 1988 Jeep, which was disabled and parked on the shoulder of the eastbound lane of Montauk Highway. At around 9:05 p.m., they were struck by a vehicle headed eastbound, which killed Strebel, 27, and injured Barton, 26, according to police. The vehicle sustained front-end damage and kept driving.
Strebel was taken by East Moriches Ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead where she was pronounced dead, while Barton was airlifted by Suffolk County police medevac helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of head and knee injuries.
According to a memorial Facebook page for Strebel, she leaves behind a 5-year-old son, A.J.
