PopHampton: April Showers Bring May Sweeps
May Sweeps is around the corner, but April has already been a busy month in the entertainment world too.
The beloved, long-running sitcom How I Met Your Mother—in which the last season took place in fictional Farhampton, New York—aired its series finale on March 31 to divided opinion. [SPOILERS AHEAD] April Fools Day got serious when diehard fans of the series cried foul that the titular mother (aka Tracy) was used as a stepping stone for main characters Ted and Robin to finally get together, but others (like myself) found it to be a touching, smart ending to a story that was clearly planned from the very beginning. Now, who’s hoping for a Farhampton spin-off?
Captain America: The Winter Soldier opened in theaters on April 4 to enthusiastic reviews. Special kudos to Hamptonite Scarlett Johansson, who had a pivotal and substantial role in her third appearance as Natasha Romanoff (aka Black Widow). While the Black Widow didn’t make much of an impression in the cluttered and unfocused Iron Man 2, Johansson came into her own in The Avengers, where we learned more about the beautiful, enigmatic assassin. The Avengers director Joss Whedon has said the Black Widow is slated to have an even bigger role in the 2015 sequel, The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Elizabeth Olsen, a frequent Montauk visitor who appeared in the HIFF 2013 opener Kill Your Darlings, will debut in Age of Ultron as the powerful, but unstable, Scarlet Witch. There’s been no word on Hamptonite Gwyneth Paltrow reprising her role as Pepper Potts in the upcoming blockbuster, but considering her character’s popularity and that she appeared in the first film, we wouldn’t be surprised to see her at least make a cameo.
Speaking of Paltrow, much ado has been made about the star’s recent split with husband, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin. In a blog post titled “Conscious Uncoupling” on her website goop.com, Paltrow made a broad statement about the difficulties she and Martin have had in their relationship and said that being good parents is their first priority. Paltrow’s use of the term “conscious uncoupling,” which she expands upon in a posted article by Dr. Habib Sadeghi and Dr. Sherry Sami, has drawn some criticism from users of social networks like Twitter. The actress has also come under fire for recent comments about parenting. On E! News, Paltrow compared being a mother and movie star to working mothers, stating, “I think to have a regular job and be a mom is not as…of course there are challenges, but it’s not like being on set.”
In lighter East End celeb news, Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon recently told audiences about an afternoon misadventure in which he attempted to take his wife and daughter for a drive on the beach in his Range Rover, only to get stuck in the sand. The Sagaponack resident called Hammer Towing of Wainscott, who assisted the embarrassed but good-natured personality. Fallon was so appreciative that he gave a shout-out to the tow truck driver, Elisha Osborn on his show. Read more about the beachside hijinks.
If you’re a frequent visitor to DansPapers.com—and you should be!—now would be a good time to catch up on our Weekly Hamptons Revenge Recap series, which recaps episodes of the Hamptons-set primetime soap opera. Revenge is fast approaching its season finale, which the cast has teased via Twitter as exciting and shocking. While we occasionally rag on the show for its glaring Hamptons geography errors and increasingly over-the-top plot twists (the less said about the waterboarding therapy episode the better), it’s great to see a show that’s set out here. Hopefully it’ll be renewed for a fourth season.
That’s all for now, Hamptonites. For more on the latest entertainment news and gossip, stay tuned to DansPapers.com. Until next time!
