Bayman Standing on Fish Trap in Tiana Bay Rescued
A local bayman was rescued this week after falling off his boat.
Southampton Town police received a call Tuesday afternoon reporting a boat adrift on Tiana Bay with no one aboard. Southampton Town bay constables went to U.S. Coast Guard Station Shinnecock to board a patrol boat and go looking, while the senior bay constable went to the east side of Tiana Bay in a vehicle and found that a man was standing on top of a fish net about 750 feet from shore, police said.
Bay constables and members of the Coast Guard responded and got the 60-year-old man off the fish trap, according to authorities. Police said the man explained that he slipped from the boat while working his traps.
Constables took the man back to his boat, which had drifted even farther across the bay, then escorted him back to a local boat ramp, police said.
