Kent Animal Shelter Offers $20 Spay/Neutering in June
With funding from PetSmart Charities, Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton is offering spay and neuter surgeries for puppies and kittens younger than 6 months old at a discounted rate of $20 throughout June.
The “Precious, Not Parents” campaign is in efforts to make spay and neuter surgeries for puppies and kittens more accessible.
Kittens as young as 4 months and puppies as young as 5 months have the ability to get pregnant and have a litter two months later, according to the shelter. Pamela Green, the executive director of Kent Animal Shelter said this is the motivation behind the campaign.
“These precious babies shouldn’t be parents at five and six months old,” she said.
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, spaying and neutering is safe at 8 to 10 weeks old. Waiting until a puppy or kitten is 6 months old to have the procedure puts the animal at risk of having a litter too soon.
Pet owners can get the discounted $20 rate by mentioning “Precious, Not Parents” when they call Kent Animal Shelter at 631-727-5731 to make the sterilization appointment. Visit kentanimalshelter.com for more information about making an appointment.
