Schneiderman Pitches Convention Center for Suffolk County

The Suffolk County Legislature voted unanimously last week to seek consultants who will analyze the benefits of creating an indoor arena within the county.

Legislature Jay Schneiderman, of Montauk, co-sponsored the legislation. In a statement from his office Monday, he said, “A large convention center could be a major boost to Suffolk County’s economy by creating thousands of local jobs and bringing in hundreds of millions of dollars from outside the region into our local economy.”

Schneiderman said members of the Suffolk equestrian community approached him about creating a suitable facility for local horse shows during the winter, and he also foresees the venue being used for other large events, such as farm shows, auto shows, sporting events and conventions.

An analysis would look into how such a facility could increase tourism and provide economic stimulus, jobs, and tax revenue. It would also investigate whether a private sector partner would work with the county to bring a convention center to fruition.

The consultants would also determine a viable size and location for the facility, taking into account ease of access from major roadways, availability of public transportation and community concerns.
