Side Dish: Cinco de Mayo, Kentucky Derby – Hamptons Style
Cinco de Mayo is observed throughout Mexico to commemorate the Mexican army’s unexpected victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. La Fondita in Amagansett will celebrate Friday, May 1 through Sunday, May 3. Holiday specials will be available and include: tamal de pollo en salsa verde—tamal filled with chicken in a green sauce served with rice, whole black beans and a salad; tamal de rajas con queso—sautéed poblano peppers, tomatoes, onions and jalapenos served with rice, whole black beans and a salad; and homemade churros served with chocolate. Harbor Grill in East Hampton is celebrating with a drink and dinner special on May 5. Diners may sip two-for-one Coronas and guests who order either the Baja fish or the chicken tacos will receive a complimentary dessert. Indian Wells Tavern in Amagansett will also celebrate the day with drink and food specials, at the bar only, including: house margaritas, tequila refresca, Coronas, nachos, quesadillas and burritos, all available for $6 each.
Townline BBQ in Sagaponack is hosting a Kentucky Derby party beginning at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 2. Guests who don the Derby attire—big hats and bow ties—will automatically be entered to win a raffle prize. Complimentary snacks will be served at the bar from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. including: smoked shrimp salad toasts, mini fried green tomato sliders and Kentucky beer cheese spread with toast points.
