Hamptons Epicure: 'Eat' End Farmers Markets Return
I bet you could go for some delicious, local produce right now. What’s in season on the East End of Long Island? Asparagus, of course, as well as arugula, bamboo shoots, bok choy, chives, leeks, lettuces and salad greens, mint, mushrooms, new potatoes, onions, oregano, peas, radishes, rhubarb, sage, spinach, tarragon and thyme. Plus those local staples: cheese, eggs, meat and loads of seafood.
Where do you gather such splendiferous wonders?
I grow my own herbs and onions and I make regular stops at Dale & Bette’s Farmstand on the Bridgehampton Turnpike, right next to Bay Burger, for eggs and asparagus. I get a lot of my greens from Marilee Foster’s stand in Sagaponack. I also load up on various goodies at Country Gardens on Scuttlehole Road in Water Mill and I get my Mecox Bay Dairy cheeses from my local Sag Harbor shops.
Is there an easier way to drink in the bounty? Yes! Most of our 14 East End farmers markets are now open for business.
You can get all of your local food needs satisfied in one stop—including…drum roll, please…delish local wines.
I’m off to the Sag Harbor Farmers Market this Saturday. Check out the list below for your nearest farmers market, and be sure to take all of your used shopping bags, egg cartons and canning jars that have accumulated over the colder months—recycling begins on the farm.
I’ll see you out there!
