Landscape Pleasures 2015: Symposium and Exclusive Garden Tours
The Parrish Art Museum’s annual two-day horticulture event, Landscape Pleasures, will return Saturday, June 13, and Sunday, June 14.
Several distinguished guests will be featured at the symposium held Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.. Award-winning author, lecturer and garden designer C. Colston Burrell, will be giving his talk Finishing Touches: The Power of Details in Garden Design, and will be accompanied by internationally acclaimed garden designers Janice Parker and Luciano Giubbilei. Parker will address the topic of the vision and process of creating landscapes, and Giubbilei will speak about the impact of collaborations in creating atmosphere. Also to make an appearance, Edwina von Gal, founder of the Perfect Earth Project, will discuss her organization’s mission of encouraging chemical-free gardening practices. Registered landscape architects can receive 3.0 credits of continuing education for attending the lectures offered on Saturday.
Exclusive, self-guided tours of private gardens in East Hampton and Wainscott will follow on Sunday running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Ticket holders will be allowed to visit the gardens at the Wainscott residencies of Toni Ross, Eleanor and Michael Kennedy, and Robin and Fred Seegal. East Hampton properties open for the garden tours belong to Jane and Michael DeFlorio, and interior designer David Kleinberg.
Colston Burrell, a two-time winner of the American Horticulture Society Book Award, is the author of 12 gardening books. Burrell, enjoying a lifelong involvement with plants as a gardener and naturalist, has given lectures internationally on design, plants and ecology for 40 years, and leads both garden and natural history tours in both the U.S. and abroad. Burrell is also principal of Native Landscape Design and Restoration, which specializes in combining aspects of nature and culture through artistic design. In 2008, he received the Award of Distinction from the Association of Professional Landscape Designers in recognition for his work in promoting sustainable gardening practices. Burrell continues to garden on 10 acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.
Janice Parker founded her landscape architecture firm in 1984 which has since been featured in The New York Times, Architectural Digest, Metropolitan Home, Interior Design, Vogue and Luxe Interiors + Design. Her firm has earned numerous awards including the 2012 National Palladio Award for Landscape Architecture, four Innovation in Design Awards from Connecticut Cottages and Gardens, the 2015 Professional Merit Award from CTASLA, and A List Award from At Home magazine in 2011. The visionary and director of many landscape architecture projects, Parker has worked for national, private and public clients. Parker was also involved in the formation of New York City’s Million Trees project, and even designed The Cherry Tree Project for the Harlem River Esplanade.
Luciano Giubbilei was born in Siena, Italy. Giubbilei studied at the Inchbald School of Design in London before establishing his own garden design practice in 1997. Responsible for garden designs that won the British Association of Landscape Industries Principal Awards for Best Domestic Garden Scheme in the UK in both 2001 and 2006, Giubbilei has also received 12 other industry awards along with gold medals from the Royal Horticulture Society’s Chelsea Flower Show in 2009 and 2011, for the Laurent-Perrier Garden. Giubbilei created a third garden for Laurent-Perrier at the 2014 Chelsea Flower Show for which he was awarded a third gold medal and the Best in Show award. His first book, The Gardens of Luciano Giubbilei, was published in 2010. Giubbulei is a member of the Society of Garden Designers (MSGD) and in 2011 was invited to be a fellow of The Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts.
Tickets for Landscape Pleasures are $225 for both the symposium and garden tours. Tickets are available for Parrish members at a reduced rate of $175. Those who purchase tickets at the sponsor level of $350+ are invited to attend a private cocktail reception at the Southampton garden of Marcia Riklis on the evening of Saturday, June 13.
