$7 Million Dedicated to Improvements in Hampton Bays
“This was a great day for Hampton Bays,” said Deputy Presiding Officer and Second District County Legislator Jay Schneiderman following the September 9 session of the Suffolk County Legislature. “Today, the county committed over six million dollars in funds for improving the Hampton Bays community.”
Schneiderman, of Southampton, secured funding for resurfacing Main Street in Hampton Bays, secured funds to dredge the Shinnecock Canal and committed funding for improvements of the Shinnecock Canal Tidal Locks. Schneiderman also supported a memorandum of understanding between Suffolk and Southampton Town to clear the way for the Canoe Place Inn project.
An additional $600,000 in the form of a grant pushes the total amount of money going into Hampton Bays to more than $7 million.
The county formally accepted a $600,000 grant to resurface Main Street. This paving project will cover from Montauk Highway to Bittersweet Road. This project is set to begin this fall. The total cost of the project is $1.8 million with the balance of $1.2 million funded by the county.
The county committed over $2 million to dredge the Shinnecock Canal to improve navigational safety in the channel. Schneiderman also secured $1.5 million for the reconstruction of the Shinnecock Canal Tidal Locks. Aging hinges in the tidal gates are in need of replacement, according to Schneiderman’s office.
A land swap between the county and town will result in $1.8 million in road re-configuration and safety improvements paid for by the developer of the Canoe Place Inn. The intersection of Montauk Highway and Newtown Road and the intersection of Montauk Highway and North Shore Road will see improvements. The 240-foot private floating dock will now become public and an additional five public parking spots will be created on the east side of the canal for access. The memorandum of understanding include a provision to ensure public access would be available 24/7, rather than just during daylight hours.
