Hamptonites Win and Lose at 2016 People’s Choice Awards

East Enders earned some gratifying wins and hard losses during the 42nd Annual People’s Choice Awards (2016)—the award show for the people by the people—which aired on CBS live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles last night, Wednesday, January 6. The People’s Choice Awards is unique as the only major awards show where fans choose the nominees and winners across multiple genres of movies, music and television.

It came as little surprise that beloved Sagaponack resident and host of NBC’s The Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon, won Favorite Late Night Talk Show Host against Conan O’Brien, James Corden, Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert.

Netflix prison dramedy Orange is the New Black, which filmed in Riverhead last year, won Favorite Streaming Series, beating out House of Cards, The Mindy Project, Transparent and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which features Hamptonite Jane Krakowski in its hilarious cast.

Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic won Favorite Crime Drama TV Actor and Actress for ABC’s Castle, which has had several episodes set in the Hamptons. Titular character Richard Castle owns a home here, though in reality the house they filmed (which was also used in ABC’s Hamptons drama Revenge) is located in Malibu, California. Our favorite virtual homebuilder, BSimBuilder, recreated Castle’s Hamptons manse in the The Sims 4 computer game—you can see it here.

Bridgehampton most famous resident, Madonna, won Favorite Music Icon (no surprise there either), though she lost Favorite Female Artist to recent Hampton visitor Taylor Swift, who performed with Madge at the 2015 iHeartRadio Music Awards. Swift also won Favorite Pop Artist., though her song “Bad Blood” featuring Kendrick Lamar lost to “What Do You Mean?” by Hamptons troublemaker Justin Bieber.

Shailene Woodley (Divergent, The Fault in Our Stars) beat out Amagansett homeowner and Marvel’s Black Widow Scarlett Johansson for Favorite Action Movie Actress. ScarJo also lost Favorite Movie Actress to Sandra Bullock, while Water Mill’s Jennifer Lopez lost Favorite Dramatic Movie Actress to Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey), and her film The Boy Next Door lost Favorite Thriller Movie to Liam Neeson‘s Taken 3.

CBS’s The Talk (hosted by Julie Chen, Sara Gilbert, Sharon Osbourne, Sheryl Underwood and Aisha Tyler) won Favorite Daytime TV Hosting Team against ABC’s daytime talk mainstays Live with Kelly and Michael (co-hosted by Bridgehampton resident Kelly Ripa and Hamptons regular Michael Strahan) and The View, founded by Hamptons renter Barbara Walters and co-hosted by East Hampton resident Joy Behar.

Off the stage, fashionista Rachel Zoe and Gwyneth Paltrow were also among the Hamptonites in attendance.
