Steven Spielberg's 'The BFG' Opens July 1, 2016
East Hampton homeowner Steven Spielberg’s latest film, The BFG, will be released on July 1, 2016. The live-action adaptation of the classic children’s book by Roald Dahl is looking to be a “gargantuan” undertaking, being co-produced by Walt Disney Pictures, DreamWorks Pictures, Amblin Entertainment and Walden Media.
The BFG is the story of Sophie, an orphaned little girl who discovers and befriends a big friendly giant (the “BFG”) who blows bottled dreams into children’s bedrooms at night. When evil giants invade England, Sophie and the BFG devise a plan to save the day. The heartwarming story was written as an expansion of a short story from Dahl’s book Danny, the Champion of the World. Dahl dedicated the book to his daughter, Olivia, who died of measles encephalitis at 7 years old.
Mark Rylance stars as the iconic title role. Newcomer Ruby Barnhill plays Sophie, while the always entertaining Bill Hader plays the evil Bloodbottler. The cast also includes Penelope Wilton, Rebecca Hall and Jemaine Clement.
