Eat the East End's Best on National Chocolate Ice Cream Day
Did you know that June 7 is National Chocolate Ice Cream Day? We’re certain you didn’t. You were too busy praising vanilla.
It’s interesting to note that National Chocolate Ice Cream Day is celebrated in June while National Ice Cream Month, National Ice Cream Day and National Vanilla Ice Cream Day are celebrated in July. Why the need for segregation? This is 2016, people!
Regardless, it’s not too late for you to celebrate this momentous day. Here are some of Dan’s Best of the Best ice cream shops from our 2015 winners on the North and South Forks.
Snowflake Ice Cream in Riverhead (1148 W Main Street, snowflakeicecream.com), which last won our Platinum award for Best Ice Cream on the South Fork and the Gold Award for the North Fork, is a standout in the East End ice cream scene. Prepared in-house, Snowflake ice cream comes in a plethora of flavors—yet for some reason does not offer straight-up chocolate. Dutch chocolate, which may very well be superior, will have to suffice for today’s merriments.
The Platinum winner for Best Ice Cream on the North Fork, Magic Fountain (9825 Main Road, Mattituck; 631-298-4908, magicfountainicecream.net) is also home to a wide and colorful variety of homemade ice cream. Since 1977, Magic Fountain has been serving the frozen goods to Long Island. Look for their massive marquee on Main Road in Mattituck. Unfortunately for chocolate, his name is not up in lights.
Located in Westhampton, our Gold award winner, Shock Ice Cream & Teddy Bear Café (99A Main Street, Westhampton; 631-288-2522, facebook.com/shockicecream) is another local staple, serving homemade ice cream, Italian ices and frozen yogurt in a variety of different flavors. It’s a little off the beaten path, located just off Main Street, but it’s worth a taste. Just be sure to ask for chocolate.
Finally, for those readers farther out on the South Fork—for delicious, homemade ice cream, look no further than Bay Burger in Sag Harbor (1742 Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike, bayburger.com), winner of the Dan’s Best of the Best Bronze award for Best Ice Cream. Don’t be fooled by the name—aside from their acclaimed burgers, owners Joe and Liza Tremblay also make their own ice cream. For those who don’t live near Sag Harbor, Joe & Liza’s Ice Cream can be found at various stores and restaurants across the Twin Forks. For a full list, check out joeandlizas.com.
Only a few hours remain for National Chocolate Ice Cream Day, so show chocolate some love. Chocolate may be the second most popular, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less important. To quote Buzz Aldrin, second man to walk on the moon, “Second comes right after first.”
