Steven Spielberg Developing Science Fiction Thriller 'The Fall'
East Hampton resident, Steven Spielberg, announced that his company, Amblin Entertainment, will be developing and producing a science fiction thriller called The Fall, based on Australian writer Pete Bridges’ script.
Deadline.com, who had the inside scoop on this news, reports that The Fall is about a recently divorced couple who must travel on foot from Atlanta to their house in the surrounding suburbs during an alien invasion to be with their children. Bridges has written thrillers in the past including Resurface, which made the Hollywood Black List of best unproduced scripts. Madhouse Entertainment’s Adam Kolbrenner and Robyn Meisinger will be producing the film.
Although Spielberg is not confirmed as the sole director of the film, he is not a stranger when it comes to creating supernatural features. The three-time Academy Award winner is most famous for his original and unconventional science fiction adventure features including E.T. The Extraterrestrial and Jurassic Park. Most recently, Spielberg directed and produced the fantasy film The BFG, based on Roald Dahl’s children’s novel of the same name. Currently, Spielberg is producing four films including a sequel for Jurassic World that is due to come out sometime in 2018. Spielberg is also directing the fourth sequel in the Indiana Jones franchise.
Spielberg’s films have always included amalgamations between surreal lifelike experience and provoking the imagination. In a 2016 interview with The New York Times, Spielberg explains how he thinks film can impact an audience.
“My only advice is that there needs to be a good balance of crowd-pleasers and movies that are good for the soul, that get us to dwell in the aftertaste of an experience that is so far-fetched or out of the box, but three days later we realize that we saw something that might change our lives,” he said.
The Fall will join Spielberg’s other supernatural alien encounter films, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Men in Black, Taken, Cowboys and Aliens, Super 8, among others.
