Dani Shapiro Reads at Writers Speak Wednesday on October 19
Author Dani Shapiro will be the second guest in the fall Writers Speak Wednesdays series of free talks and readings open to the public at Stony Brook Southampton this season. Shapiro will read from and talk about her work on Wednesday, October 19, at 7 p.m. in the Radio Lounge on the second floor of Chancellors Hall, following a brief reception beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Shapiro is the bestselling author of the memoirs Devotion and Slow Motion. Her 2013 memoir, Still Writing: The Perils and Pleasures of a Creative Life drew praise from Salon as “warm, honest, forthcoming … a book that will provide inspiration and insight to new writers, and will be a comfort and companion to seasoned writers.”
She has written five novels, including Black & White and Family History, and her writing has appeared in The New Yorker and on This American Life. Shapiro is the co-founder of the Sirenland Writers Conference in Positano, Italy, and has taught in writing programs at Columbia, NYU, The New School and Wesleyan.
The author, who lives with her family in Litchfield County, Connecticut, has a new book, Hourglass: Time, Memory, Marriage (Knopf), coming out in 2017.
Other writers scheduled for the fall series include: John Knight in conversation with Emily Gilbert on November 2; Lia Purpura on November 16 and Ruth Franklin and Susan Scarf Merrell on November 30.
On December 7, the evening will be devoted to readings by students currently enrolled in the MFA in Creative Writing and Literature program.
Writers Speak Wednesdays programs are free and open to the public. The evenings begin with a brief reception at 6:30 p.m., followed by readings at 7 p.m., and then a Q&A and book signing. All programs are held in the Radio Lounge on the second floor of Chancellors Hall at Stony Brook Southampton, located at 239 Montauk Highway in Southampton.
