Scarlett Johansson in New 'Ghost in the Shell' Trailer Teaser
Finally, the world has been given a look, albeit brief, of Amagansett homeowner Scarlett Johansson in the first full trailer for her upcoming film Ghost in the Shell. The 13-second clip Paramount released Monday is even shorter than previous teasers from the film, but this time it gives a specific date for the much anticipated full trailer, which comes out on Sunday, November 13.
The short piece of footage shows Johansson as lead character “The Major,” who is called Major Kusanagi in the Japanese anime the new film adapts into live action. She’s invisible—one of her many cybernetic enhancements—at the start of the teaser, then The Major takes down a bad guy with a huge uppercut, sending him spinning in the air. Immediately after that, Johansson materializes for about one second.
As The Major attacks, she and her opponent are standing in ankle-deep water with gritty tenements behind them. When she appears, a more metropolitan and futuristic urban center is in the background. If the film stays true to the source material, this city should be Niihama, Niihama Prefecture, also called “New Port City” in late 21st century Japan.
Ghost in the Shell originated as a manga (Japanese comic book) series and was adapted into an anime film of the same name in 1995. A sequel, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, was released in 2004. The new film is directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman), produced by East Hampton resident Steven Spielberg‘s Dreamworks, and is due for release on March 31, 2017.
