Kyle MacLachlan Talks 'Twin Peaks' Return
Golden Globe-winning, Emmy-nominated star and Hamptonite Kyle MacLachlan has had prominent roles in shows such as Sex in the City, Desperate Housewives and Portlandia. He recently returned to what is arguably his breakout role, Dale Cooper, in David Lynch‘s revival of Twin Peaks.
In the original Twin Peaks, Cooper is an FBI special agent heading an investigation of a murder in the small town of Twin Peaks, Washington. The original series was wildly popular, but lost steam in its second season and ended on a massive cliffhanger. Now, more than 25 years later, Twin Peaks is back, with MacLachlan continuing his role as Agent Cooper—with a twist. The reboot of the show follows Cooper’s journey back to Twin Peaks from an otherworldly place and features many of the original series’ cast members.
In the new show, MacLachlan not only plays Agent Cooper, but also Mr. C, his doppelgänger, and another character, the dim-witted Dougie Jones. When asked about playing multiple roles with such distinct personalities, MacLachlan told The Hollywood Reporter, “I’ve never had the opportunity [before] to play these extreme characters.”
Though many characters from the original series have returned, some of the show’s original stars passed away before the reboot. Lynch used footage from the original show to incorporate some, like actor Frank Silva, who played the sinister BOB. MacLachlan noted to The Hollywood Reporter that “I think it’s beautiful. As actors, this is how we stay around…The characters are still making an impact. As an actor, that’s what you want.”
Though MacLachlan primarily resides in Manhattan, he summers in the Hamptons with his wife and son.
The new Twin Peaks airs on Sunday nights at 9 p.m. on Showtime. The original series can be streamed on Netflix.
