Teen Lists 10 Things Young Feminists Should Know at Sag Harbor Women’s March
Jan 22, 2018 - Sinéad Murray, an 18-year-old Pierson senior and a founder of the Pierson Feminist Club, aka Feminists United, shared a list of "10 Things I Want Young Girls Who Believe in Feminism to Know" at the 2018 Women's March in Sag Harbor on Saturday, January 20.

The student, who said their club has since been renamed the Women's Issues Club by the school, "which we are very angry about," told assembled and cheering demonstrators how meaningful it is for her to talk with younger girls about feminism and see them embrace the message.

To that end, she offered her list of things young feminists should know, including such statements as "Being a feminist does not make you harsh, intense, unlikable or bitter;" "Educate yourself about consent and healthy sexual relationships;" and "You are more than your outside appearance—do not let people reduce you to your body parts."

Murray said this month marks The Women's Issues Club's first anniversary, and that they are the first club of its kind at the school. During their first year, the club has fundraised for Planned Parenthood and The Retreat, held seminars with area businesswomen, such as Tracy Anderson, and opened a dialogue in school and the community at large.

This year's Women's March drew much larger crowds locally than its predecessor in 2017.
