At
Your Service, Mom

Mother’s
Day is just around the corner, and if you’re stumped about what
to give this year, there’s an easy way to go beyond chocolate, cards
and candy. Instead of rushing out to find the “perfect” gift,
start Mom’s special day off with an elegant breakfast in bed. It
will make her feel loved and appreciated.
When she wakes up, give her a menu of what will be served and then head
back to the kitchen to get started. Before preparing the breakfast, it
is important to think about its presentation. First, find a sturdy tray
that is big enough to hold all of the items you plan to serve and line
it with a decorative doily, place mat or large napkin. Set up the china,
napkins and silverware as though it were an elegant table. There are many
ways to add a sweet, personal touch, such as wrapping the silverware with
a decorative ribbon and flowers. Also, buy some of her favorite fresh
flowers to display in a vase. Ultimately, Mom should feel like she’s
being served at a luxurious five-star hotel, in the comfort of her own
bed.
The next step is to prepare a meal that she will love. Depending on her
personal tastes, some easy and popular choices are Eggs Benedict, Eggs
Florentine, cinnamon French toast, enchiladas or pancakes. Any egg dish
can be made more elegant by adding smoked salmon, goat cheese and other
special ingredients. To save time, prepare as much as possible the night
before. Also, include side dishes such as a sausage, bacon, fresh fruit,
a small cheese platter, homemade muffins, biscuits or a yogurt parfait,
making sure that all are displayed attractively. For example, if you choose
to make a yogurt parfait, serve it in a fancy glass goblet decorated with
sliced strawberries, kiwis and other colorful fruits. When finished preparing
the meal, pour a glass of fresh orange juice, a cup of coffee or perhaps
even a smoothie and bring her the tray, being careful not to spill anything,
of course.
If possible, arrange several large pillows behind Mom’s back for
support, so she is comfortable. Turn off the phone and give her a copy
of Dan’s Papers or another favorite magazine to read. And last,
but certainly not least, clean the kitchen when you’re done. This
might be the best present of all.
Another way to show thanks later in the day is by making a festive picnic
basket. Because, after all, most mothers just want to spend quality time
with their families – a gift that is priceless. Find a tablecloth,
blanket and a basket with handles and then decide what food to pack. If
preparing sandwiches, pack the toppings, such as tomatoes, lettuce, onions
and condiments, separately to avoid soggy bread. To make a gourmet picnic
basket, pack cheese, crackers, a bottle of wine and a fancy dessert, such
as chocolate covered strawberries. Avoid cream-based foods that spoil
easily, such as coleslaw and potato salad. It is a good idea to keep wet
and dry items separately, and remember to bring plenty of water. Nowadays,
many baskets come equipped with plastic dishes, cups and utensils –
there are also companies that sell pre-packaged picnic baskets. Bring
some music and plan outdoor activities that the entire family can enjoy
together after the picnic.
There are so many options when preparing a meal for your mother, but it
should be based on her personal tastes and preferences. Although we should
show our appreciation year-round, Mother’s Day is a wonderful opportunity
to celebrate motherhood, and there are few gestures more thoughtful than
giving her a luxurious breakfast in bed or family picnic.
