Your Letters ![]() Dear Dave, I read an article in one of your Montauk Papers (I’ve since lost the paper) however I’m assuming that the article meant to be “fact.” I cannot process the notion that there is, in Montauk someone who is so very twisted and cruel as your “deer-slayer.” First of all it illegal (plowing into a deer on purpose) but secondly, do we even want to live with someone in our midst who is so cruel and dangerous? As the adage goes, “they will tire of killing animals and move to people.” There are many solutions to the so called “deer problem.” However, I don’t see any where as many deer as we have had in the past. Most villages on Long Island have 20 mph speed limits. Why not Montauk? Also, birth control seems to work for Fire Island. Why not try it here? If this “deer slaughterer” person is real than I am out of here. Imagine how safe we are if the police know his plate numbers, what he is up to and still haven’t incarcerated him? It makes one pause to consider the mentality of the East end and whether or not we want our children raised in this environment, especially since we try to teach respect for animals. The article from a local paper where there were kids from East Hampton torturing deers by dragging them from their cars should have been a wake up call. The next wake up call should have been not having or reading what form of punishment the perpetrators of this sick crime received. I think the time has finally come to get out of town and hope that those who choose to live here will be strong enough to take on the “evil-doers”. I hope that they and their children will win. Maybe a “come on” mentality is in these days, but we have to live with ourselves and something those who commit atrocities can’t and bail out. That’s not very uncommon in Montauk or East Hampton. Is it? Thanks for the good memories Eastern Long Island, good luck in the future. Claire IT WAS JUST A JOKE! The deer hunter got darted in the butt and sent to Madagascar by Montauk locals. Dear Dave, I love how I can check out the news in Montauk by going to www.montaukpioneer.com. It really allows me to keep up on all of the happenings in the most beautiful place in the world. Now I can look at the pioneer while sitting at my desk at my office. I look forward to it every week and I am always looking forward to doing some much needed surfing out in Montauk. See you next summer. John Lilimston via e-mail MISSING MONTAUK -Karen Maxwell, via e-mail
