Stowed Away

Ocean Beach Resort Looks Into Their Erosion Protection Options

By TJ Clemente

Next time twenty three year old Gregory K. Donahue of New York City decides to go aboard a Viking Line vessel in Montauk he might be advised to just pay the twenty bucks. It seems for reasons known only to himself Mr. Donohue sneaked aboard the new high speed Superstar. Not only that once illegally aboard Mr. Donahue vandalized the primary piping of the vessel and was caught red handed by crewmembers. So on July 8th the Town of East Hampton Police were summoned to the Viking Dock on West Lake Drive to retrieve Mr. Donohue. At the time the company estimated the damage to be around two hundred dollars so Mr. Donohue was charged with Forth degree criminal mischief, a misdemeanor.

However when Mr. Donahue appeared in front of Justice Catherine A. Cahill in East Hampton Town Justice Court he was ordered to pay $3,360.00 in “restitution” to the company. Then the case was adjourned.

It didn’t seem like it was a very easy couple of weeks for Greg Donahue, but when you get caught sneaking onto a ferry and then vandalizing it, you shouldn’t be having a good day. What was the point of getting stowed away onto this vessel? Was the guy just looking for a fun adventure? If you want to go on an adventure, go hiking or something, don’t sit inside of a ferry and then vandalize it.

The only other thing that I can think of as a motive for jumping aboard the ferry and vandalizing it is that it was a dare that was given to him and when he accepted it he couldn’t get out of it. But even that is a stretch.

Years ago, I had a friend that liked to make a habit of sneaking onto trains without paying for a ticket. He would go on the train and then go immediately to the bathroom and sit in there, avoiding the ticket agent. Then when his stop came, he would leave the bathroom. I can’t imagine this being a pleasant experience. After all, train bathrooms are never very pretty and if the ride was longer then an hour, well I can’t even imagine that.

Eventually, this friend of mine was caught trying to do this exact same thing but on a bus. The bus driver pulled over and told him to get off. He had to walk five four miles to the nearest town and then he had to take a taxi to the nearest bus station. Which of course, he had to pay for.

The point of all of this is that if you are going to do something stupid, such as break the law, there is a good chance that you are going to get caught and when you get caught it is never fun.

As for me, I never really have to worry about stowing away onboard a boat, I don’t need adventure like that in my life. Getting out of bed in the morning is adventure enough.
