Montauk Fishing

Great Time Of Year
By Tracy Lizza
What a fabulous time to be here in Montauk! Our postcard picture
town is awash in fall colors and the sunsets are especially
eye-catching this time of year. The crowds are light but the
beaches still have activity with surfcasters and surfers scattered
about. People are still beachcombing and soaking in the crisp
autumn air with shoes in hand, although now the uniform shoe
of flip-flops has been replaced with Uggs. The official sport
of Montauk - fishing (of course!), is in high gear with plenty
of pole bending action to be had.
The striped bass bite has been very consistent. Trolling, diamond
jigging and live eels have all enticed the fish with something
to sink their teeth into. The Lazybones had a steady bite going
with some nice fish landed including the 26-pounder slammed
by Stu Peierrepont. Pool winner Eric Latrimore took an 18
1/2-pound
striper on anther trip. Robert Ciriale was the lucky pool winner
who took in a 33-pound striper aboard an Ebb Tide trip. A night
bass trip on Sea Otter V provided Tim McDariah with some extra
cash courtesy of the 29 pounder he caught on a live eel. The
Elizabeth reported some excellent bass action with many limits
taken. Jim Gleissner sailed a day charter aboard Sea Otter
IV and had great luck using live eels to score bass to 28
pounds.
Louis Magdelon was aboard the Captain Mark and his group jigged
their limit of bass to 35 pounds.
The bluefish are everywhere! That is great news for those anglers
who enjoy a good workout while fishing, as this feisty species
does not give up without a fight. Milton Thompson swung an
8 pounder over the rails on a Viking trip and Larry Hollings
scored
with a nice 6 pounder.
Porgie season closed for the year on October 31st. Boats had
a decent turnout for the final farewell including The Flying
Cloud and The Viking. Larry Morton won the pool with a nice
3 1/ 2 pound scup. The sea bass bite has also been decent.
A 6.53-pounder
was weighed in at Gone Fishing Marina.
The blackfish bite has been steadily improving with each passing
week. Using green crabs and sometimes hermits, the togs have
had a ferocious appetite. This past week saw plenty of banner
days on trips aboard Sea Otter V. Quantity and quality were
the norm most days. Dean Halley weighed in a 10.8-pound tog.
Mr.
Kim had no complaints with his 10.5-pounder. Rich Lee was the
big winner with a solid 11-pounder scoring him the pool. A
nice 11 pounder also sailed over the rails aboard a private
charter
aboard The Wake last week.
Some tog trips have provided a mixed bag for anglers. Pollack,
ling and cod have made their way over the rails. A special
trip aboard the Marlin VI made a happy angler out of John
Gredys who
won first place in the pool with a 21-pound pollack. Ted Eng
was just behind with a 20-pounder.
The time is right now to get in on this spectacular action.
