Good Is The Word

By Tracy Lizza

Good food, good times and great fishing and beaches sum up a Montauk visitor’s week spent in our idyllic seaside village. Who could ask for more? The summer season is winding down but the enthusiasm for this town and its attractions does not wane. If you love our summers then you will certainly appreciate our fall season. With great festivals in store and a terrific fishing season ahead, now is the time to make your reservations for autumn.

This past week anglers enjoyed a steady fishing bite with some great catches both inshore and offshore. Surfcasters experienced a decent bite comprised of some bluefish and striped bass action. Arden G. landed a nice 25 pounder off the beach this past week. The charter boat Double Header had the Montalbano family out for some live lining action for stripers. They reeled in their limit with fish to 38 pounds. The Arc Angel was out celebrating Kenny Heffernan’s birthday. They also live lined for bass and had their limit to 31 pounds.

The night bass bite was somewhat sporadic with mixed conditions and some tough tides to contend with. Kathy Kronuch didn’t let that deter her from hauling a nice 40 pounder over the side aboard a Sea Otter V night trip. This week the New Moon will cast her glow over Montauk, which usually coincides with increased action where striped bass are concerned.

The party boats had some very nice fluke landed this week. With many days offering happy anglers both quantity and quality. Larry Miller scored on a Viking run with an 11.10 pounder. Justin Scudder took top honors aboard the Ebb Tide with a 10 pound flattie. It was the 9-1/ 2 pounder that put a smile on the face of Tom “The Teaser” aboard Sea Otter V. Matt Serge had no complaints after winning the pool aboard the Lazybones with his 8.6-pound fluke.

Other inshore news included a fairly consistent porgy bite with weights and some limits to 3 pounds. The sea bass are still offering some good action. Aboard the Restless, Michael Tonacchi landed a 6.03 pounder.

Offshore, the Y-Knot II scored with yellow fin tuna to 60 pounds. Some boats sailing from Westlake Fishing Lodge also saw some exciting action. Bob Testa’s Reel Affair, put together a great catch consisting of close to a dozen yellow fin and 4 albacore to 33.45 pounds, caught by Dean Lambrois. Ron Catina and pals sailed aboard his Gotta Fly and trolled for a beauty of a yellow fin tipping the scales at 76.3 pounds.

There was some big excitement for John Burton and crew aboard the Gannet. Breaking out the cameras the guys released an estimated 125 pound Blue Marlin. Emile Caiazza was out celebrating 16-year-old Vinnie Doherty’s birthday when the gang nailed a 164-pound thresher shark. What a gift!

This weekend Uihlein’s Marina will host the annual Montauk Mercury Grand Slam. This event, centered on inshore catches, promises excitement and entertainment for everyone. Great prizes and a great time is sure to be had by all so head down to the Harbor and be part of the fun.
