MetroPCS is looking to build a cellphone tower hidden inside the church clock tower on South Main Street in Southampton, and the First Presbyterian Church of Southampton is on board.
But the Village is on the fence.
Local residents have formed a group called, “Save the Clock Tower of Southampton Village” that oppose the construction because the historical integrity of the clock tower will be a problem.
MetroPCS would pay the church as much as $2,000 a month for the antenna.
The Architectural Review Board will meet on Wednesday, May 30, at 7 p.m. at Village Hall on Main Street to discuss the proposal.
