James Beres Dies in Sagaponack House Fire

A 71-year-old man died in an early morning house fire at a Narrow Lane home in Sagaponack on Saturday.

Southampton Town police said one occupant escaped with minor injuries, though James Beres died in the fire. The family dog also reportedly died.

A 911 caller reported the fire at 198 Narrow Lane at 5:57 a.m. Upon arrival, the house was engulfed in flames, police said.

Bridgehampton Fire Department firefighters and ambulance personnel responded along with support from Sag Harbor Fire Department, Sag Harbor Volunteer Ambulance, Southampton Fire Department and East Hampton Fire Department.

Town police detectives, town fire marshals, the Suffolk County Police Arson Unit, The Suffolk County Police Crime Scene Unit and the Suffolk County medical examiner.

The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation by Southampton Town Police Detectives in conjunction with Southampton Town Fire Marshalls, the Suffolk County Police Arson Unit, the Suffolk County Police Crime Scene Unit, and the Medical Examiner.
