Community Continues to Come Together for Sag Harbor Cinema
The East End community continues to rally around the efforts to save the Sag Harbor Cinema.
Visitors to Sag Harbor over Memorial Day weekend will see a new wall where a gaping hole has been. Donated through the efforts of NK Architects and Croxton Collaborative Architects, with the help of Aidan Corish of TANGRAM Intelligent Branding and local builder Men At Work, the new 42′ wall will feature a tribute to First Responders as well as a request for help in rebuilding the Sag Harbor Cinema.
Included in the wall design will be cutaway views of the new vision for the Cinema by NK Architects and Croxton Collaborative Architects. The expansion of possibilities for the redesign has taken both preservation and comfort into account.
Further help has come from designer Elizabeth Dow of Elizabeth Dow East Hampton, fabric historian and interior designer of the Obama White House, who has offered to furnish all fabric for the theater’s new seating. And the repair of the Cinema’s badly damaged and crumpled metal letters has been offered by sculptor-metal smith John Battle, whose workshop is in Bridgehampton.
Jack Keats of SurfandSlide has created T-shirts with his own version of the famous Sag Harbor logo. To literally top it all off, hats with the a similar logo have been donated to the effort by Tom Bongiorno of Bongiorno Brand who also, unbidden, decided to dedicate profits from sales to the effort to save the Cinema.
Additionally, Donna Karan and Nicole Miller recently attended a fundraising event in New York City for the Cinema. The two join celebrities like Billy Joel, Martin Scorcese and others who have donated to the campaign to save the Sag Harbor establishment.
The Sag Harbor Partnership must raise $6 million by July 1 to protect the $1 million already pledged by another donor. Funds will be collected by December 31. For more information, visit sagharborcinema.org.
