ARTSI: Artists of Shelter Island Open Studios Event

August 18, 2018, noon5 pm.

Artists of Shelter Island, ARTSI, is pleased to announce their ninth annual open studio event.
Fourteen artists welcome visitors to their studios. While the artwork is for sale, and many of the artists accept commission, visitors are welcome to simply come and enjoy the experience of seeing art in the very varied spaces where it is created.

Founded nine years ago by Shelter Island artists of various disciplines and styles, the ARTSI studio tour has become a summer highlight for locals as well as visiting art lovers who come to the East End of Long Island. The group was formed partly in reaction to the Artist Alliance of East Hampton’s annual open studio tour. With that tour spanning a very wide area from Bridgehampton to Amagansett, and north to Springs, Sag Harbor and Shelter Island, explains Janet Culbertson, an environmental artist and a founding member of ARTSI, “We found that the range was just too far and too few people were making it all the way to Shelter Island, so we decided to form our own group.”

Small by design, membership to the group is selective; it is juried by a group of five who make decisions each January from requests for membership by carefully examining the artist’s body of work and background. While a formal degree in art is not required—many members are retired from other professions—the group looks for fine artists who pursue their work full-time. Among the members are photographers, painters, digital artists, sculptors and mixed media artists.

This year’s participating artists are:  Sally Jacobs Baker, Janet Culbertson, Kathryn A. Cunningham, Jerry Glassberg, Amy Grabelsky, Melora Griffis, Katherine Hammond, Megan Hergrueter, Karen Kiaer, Joe Reilly, June Shatken, Jana Sheinker, Peter Waldner, and Mike Zisser.
