SoMAS Southampton Fall Lecture Series
Stony Brook Southampton will be hosting the first lecture of the semester titled “High-Precision Measurements of the Emission Rates of Greenhouse Gases from East Coast Urban Environments” by Dr. Paul Shepson. Please join us for what is sure to be an exciting lecture!
Cities such as NYC are leading the way in setting aggressive targets for greenhouse gas emission reductions. For example, NYC has committed to decreasing its GHG emissions by 80% by 2050. This represents a massive change in the way NYC will do business. Such a target also implies the ability conduct measurements of the rate of progress of GHG emission reductions, with unprecedented precision. Over the past 10 years, we have been working on development of improved methods for measurements of urban area-wide emission rates for CO2 and CH4. Our approach has involved an integration of “bottom-up” (emission inventory models) and “top-down” (atmospheric observations) methods. The Shepson Group has been developing methods using his airplane, the “Airborne Laboratory for Atmospheric Research.” In this talk, I will discuss the challenge, our approach and results from Indianapolis, DC, Baltimore and NYC.
