Word on the Street @ The Watermill Center

Word on the Street is an ongoing text-based public art initiative by House of Trees consisting of original political and poetic banners created by renowned female international artists and writers in collaboration with female refugee fabricators based in Texas. Artists and writers include, Carrie Mae Weems, Tania Bruguera, Anne Carson, Amy Khoshbin, Laurie Anderson, A.M. Homes, Wangechi Mutu, Jenny Holzer, House of Trees and Naomi Shihab Nye. Commissioned by Times Square Arts, and on view at The Watermill Center through April 17, 2018.

Originally created from felt as protest expressions during the 2017 Women’s March, and subsequently exhibited in Times Square (2017 – 2018),Word on the Street banners speak to the urgent, timeless concerns of the individual, community and the requirements of citizenry. These banners have been displayed in a variety of institutions before being taken out into the streets to be carried by marchers as protests arise, such as Leila Heller Gallery, Kimmel Galleries, and the Whitney Houston Biennial. The exhibition at the Watermill Center marks the premier exhibition of the original hand made felt banners.

Times Square Arts, the public art program of the Times Square Alliance, is the largest public platform for innovative contemporary performance and visual arts. With 312,000 daily visitors to New York City’s Times Square, it is one of the highest profile public arts programs and since its inception, Times Square Arts has featured works by a diverse group of more than five dozen prominent and emerging artists.

House of Trees is an arts collective working to expand the public appreciation and understanding of contemporary art through the production of murals, performances, installations, and other high-visibility publicly engaged artworks. House of Trees’ projects are interventions in unpredictable sites, curated for both specific audiences and the larger public. House of Trees has mounted projects nationally and internationally with venues including the Kimmel Center in New York City; the Hotel Tropicana in San Antonio, Texas; and The Watermill Center in Water Mill, New York, among others.
