71st Annual Artists & Writers Charity Softball Game

The 2019 game will be held August 17 at East Hampton’s Herrick Park. Spectators are welcome to watch batting practice, starting at 1:30 pm, with The Game’s first pitch set for 3pm. In case of inclement weather on August 17, a rain date is set for August 24.

The Game is played to benefit four local charities––The Eleanor Whitmore Early Childhood Center, Phoenix House Academy, The Retreat, and East End Hospice. Those local non-profits provide essential services for all ages and communities across the East End.

The Game traces its origins to a pick-up softball game, organized in 1948 by a group of artists that included Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Philip Pavia and Jackson Pollock. Since it became a charity game in the 1970s, scores of nationally-celebrated Artists & Writers have come out to play, including Christopher Reeve, Paul Simon, Jay McInerney, George Plimpton and many more.

Rosters for the 2019 game are being finalized. The Writers will be led by The New Yorker’s Ken Auletta and by sportswriter/novelist Mike Lupica. In recent years, ex-major leaguers John Franco and Jim Leyritz have played for The Writers, as have screenwriter Bill Collage, Fox News correspondent Rick Leventhal, travel writer Richard Wiese and political reporter Carl Bernstein.

Local artist Leif Hope, who has been the organizer of The Game for the last 39 years, is bringing together the Artists roster along with Manhattan-based architect Ronnette Riley. Mr. Hope has found ways to include Bill Clinton, Betty Friedan, Rudy Guiliani, Yogi Berra, Gael Greene, Luann de Lesseps, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Kristen Davis, Joe Torre and others. Last year’s the Artists roster featured CBS news anchor Chris Wragge, actor Michael Dougherty, landscape architect Ed Hollander and CBS weatherman Lonnie Quinn.
