Author Margaret Newell ‘Indians, Colonists and the Origins of American Slavery’

Margaret Ellen Newell, Professor of History at The Ohio State University will read from her book Brethren by Naturerevealing how English colonists in New England enslaved thousands of Indians and  Massachusetts became the first English colony to legalize slavery in 1641. Drawing on letters, diaries, newspapers, and court records, she not only describes how the colonist’s desire for slaves shaped the Pequot War of 1637 and King Philip’s War of 1675-76, but Professor Newell recovers the slaves’ own stories and shows how they influenced New England society in crucial ways. Some Native Americans achieved freedom and power in this new colonial culture, but many expierienced violence and family separations.

Professor Newell’s research explains the link between the fate of Africans and Indians by tracing the trade in Indian captives as part of the Caribbean and Atlantic slave trade economies.
