Camp Wikoff: A Close Look at Montauk’s Recuperative Encampment for Spanish-American War Combatants
When the Fifth Army Corps, including Roosevelt’s Rough Riders, returned to Montauk in the summer of 1898 following its swift and decisive victories over Spanish forces at Santiago de Cuba in the Spanish-American War, the men were mostly in terrible shape. Jeff Heatley, who told the story of Colonel Theodore Roosevelt, the Rough Riders, and Camp Wikoff in his Book “Bully!” has done extensive research on the camp and Theodore Roosevelt’s role in the war, which made him a hero and paved the way for his political career.
