Mort Künstler: ‘The Godfather’ of Pulp Fiction Illustators

Before blockbuster superhero movies, adventure magazines featuring exciting stories and thrilling illustrations provided the same adrenaline rush. As the go-to artist and illustrator, Mort Künstler’s work graced hundreds of magazine covers firmly establishing his prominence in the pulp fiction genre. (He was the first to illustrate Mario Puzo’s book, The Godfather.) These original artworks are shown together for the first time in The Heckscher Museum of Art’s exhibition. The images of men in combat, women in distress, and nature threatening man immediately catches the viewer’s attention.
