Photos from the Front: A Veteran’s Personal Reflections of the Vietnam War

By 1967, when Jim “Zak” Szakmary signed up for a three-year enlistment with the Marine Corps, the United States was already well embroiled in the Vietnam War. A native of Queens and a college student at the time, he set off for the jungles of Southeast Asia to fight in a difficult war aimed at halting the spread of communism in the region. During his 13-month tour he documented his day-to-day life whenever he had access to a camera, capturing images of the Vietnamese countryside, the people he encountered, and his fellow Marines. Fifty years later, he will share these images and describe his experiences. Co-sponsored with the Rogers Memorial Library. To register call the museum at 631-283-2494.
