The Merchant of Venice, though classified as a comedy in the First Folio, is most remembered for its celebrated and moving passages such as Portia’s “the quality of mercy” and Shylock’s “Hath not a Jew eyes?” speeches.  Scholars have long debated whether Shakespeare was being anti-Semitic or merely exploring anti-Semitism.  Join writer Becky Cole for the first of a two-part discussion on this complicated work.  New participants are welcome
