The Art of Creative Writing
Fridays, August 17, 24, and 31, 10 am–1:00 pm
Join Jennifer Senft for Creative Writing. Class size is very small, so each member receives full attention, maximum focus on their writing, and a positive group experience.
We will view The Beauty of Our Voice, the multi-media Platform exhibition by Barthélémy Toguo, which opens August 5. Jen will prompt participants to consider the issues Toguo addresses, and to write creatively and in ways that you, as a writer, feel connected to. You may write fiction or memoir.
Some of the issues Toguo touches upon are race, migration, and feelings of belonging. This can encompass not belonging, how or where, or in what ways you feel you do or don’t fit in your own life or in the United States. You may write pieces that are wholly personal or are politically charged. Or you may be touched by another element of the exhibition and use that as a prompt.
We will spend the start of the class viewing the exhibition, then writing. The bulk of each session will be spent workshopping your writing. You will share your work with the group, provide feedback for others, and receive feedback. We will focus on both art and craft. The group is very small, and feedback is kind. Prepare to work, to laugh, and to enjoy a congenial class.
