Writing Workshops Begin This Month at Parrish Art, South Fork Natural History Museums
Both the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill and the South Fork Natural History Museum in Bridgehampton will begin weekly writing workshops this month, offering aspiring professional writers and recreational writers a chance to hone their craft.
Jennifer Senft, MA, MFA, will serve as instructor of both workshops.
The Parrish will offer “The Art of Fiction” on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon from April 16 through May 7. The workshop is designed to be casual, fun and instructive, with a focus on fiction inspired by the museum’s current art exhibitions.
The special exhibition Parrish Perspectives includes works by Jules Feiffer, Robert Dash and Joe Zucker. Selections from the Parrish permanent collection will also be considered.
Some topics explored will be stories imagined within a piece of art, fiction in the style of the art, and fiction that replicates the medium. The workshop will allow students to practice prose, poetry or dramatic writing.
Senft will share applicable reading material, including poetry by Frank O’Hara and prose by Oscar Wilde.
Advance registration is required. The cost is $120, or $100 for Parrish members. Register online at parrishart.org/programs/1139 or call 631-283-2118 ext. 130.
At South Fork Natural History Museum, a nature writing workshop begins April 25 and continues each Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon through May 9.
The workshop will explore nature writing in memoir, poetry, fiction, and personal essay. Senft will share reading material, including an excerpt from the new bestseller H is for Hawk by Helen Macdonald, poetry by Rimbaud and Frost, fiction by Richard Brautigan, and personal essay by Annie Dillard.
Participants will receive writing prompts, share their writing with the group, and receive feedback in a small and friendly environment. Participants will discuss their individual perspectives of nature and feelings about how they are expressed in the published writings and in those of workshop members.
