Southampton Police Warn of Fake PSEG Collection Calls
One or more scam artists have been calling Southampton Village residents and small business owners to collect on nonexistent overdue electricity bills.
Southampton Village police say they have received several reports of a caller identifying himself as a representative of PSEG and demanding immediate payment via Green Dot MoneyPak, a type of prepaid card available at convenience stores and pharmacies.
Police note that PSEG offers many payment methods, but MoneyPaks are not one of them. Additionally, anyone at risk of having their electricity turned off due to nonpayment will receive written notice on their bill at least 10 days prior to shutoff.
PSEG customers who receive a suspicious call are advised to contact PSEG directly at 1-800-436-PSEG (7734).
