You don’t have to leave Long Island for an amazing day picking delicious apples. The North Fork has many U-pick farms with tasty varieties perfect for baking or snacking.

Apple picking is a fun family activity and it also makes for a great date, especially on the beautiful North Fork. Take your pick of the best North Fork apple picking destinations—and always call ahead to confirm availability.

Harbes Family Farm & Vineyard, 715 Sound Avenue, Mattituck, is famous for roasted super-sweet corn, a farmers market full of fruits, vegetables, pies and homemade goods as well as a wine tasting bar, an interactive Barnyard Adventure, pick-your-own pumpkin patch, the Robin Hood Corn Maze, and hayrides. Over the season 24 varieties ripen. Ride on the Apple Express to the ripest apples. Lewin Farms, 812 Sound Avenue, Wading River, has pick-your-own apples on its 1,100-acre family-owned and -operated farm. Picking is open weekends and holidays from late August through late October—until the apples are gone. The orchard is on Fresh Pond Avenue. Be sure to call ahead to 631-929-4327. Visit

Wickham’s Fruit Farm, 28700 Route 25, Cutchogue, is a historic farm, one of the largest on the North Fork, offering a wide variety of the freshest fruits and vegetables. Pick your own Macoun, Fuji, Empire and Cortland apples. Enjoy freshly baked pies, preserves and more.  U-pick hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, closed Sundays. Woodside Orchards, 729 Main Road, Aquebogue, and 116 Manor Lane, Jamesport, has pick-your-own apples at both locations. Jamesport is open for U-Pick weekends and holidays and Aquebogue is open seven days a week 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. You can choose from more than 10 different varieties of apples as they ripen during the months of September and October.
